Answer
Knee pain is considered serious when it is persistent, worsening, or associated with structural damage or significant functional limitation. While mild pain from strain or overuse may resolve with rest, certain warning signs indicate the need for medical evaluation.
1. Persistent or Worsening Pain
Pain lasting more than a few weeks, or increasing despite rest and medication, may suggest arthritis, cartilage damage, or ligament injury.
2. Swelling & Inflammation
Visible swelling, warmth, or fluid accumulation in the knee joint can indicate internal injury or infection.
3. Instability or Giving Way
If the knee feels unstable, buckles, or cannot bear weight, ligament tears such as ACL or meniscus injuries may be present.
4. Limited Movement
Difficulty bending or straightening the knee, joint locking, or stiffness may signal cartilage or mechanical joint problems.
5. Pain After Injury
Severe pain following a fall, accident, or sports injury may indicate fracture, ligament rupture, or dislocation requiring urgent care.
