Answer
Cartilage damage refers to injury or wear of the smooth, rubbery tissue that covers the ends of bones inside a joint. This cartilage allows bones to glide over each other without friction. When it becomes torn, worn out, or thinned, joint movement becomes painful and restricted.
1. Causes
Cartilage damage commonly occurs due to sports injuries, sudden twisting movements, ligament tears, meniscus injuries, ageing-related wear and tear, or long-standing joint misalignment.
2. Affected Joints
It most frequently affects weight-bearing joints such as the knee and hip, but can also involve the shoulder and ankle.
3. Symptoms
People with cartilage damage may experience joint pain, swelling, stiffness, grinding sensation, locking, or reduced range of motion, especially during activity.
4. Treatment
Management depends on severity and includes medications, physiotherapy, injections, and arthroscopic cartilage repair procedures. Advanced damage may eventually require joint replacement.
