Answer
A ligament injury is damage to the strong bands of connective tissue that connect bones to each other and stabilize joints. These injuries occur when a ligament is stretched beyond its normal limit or torn due to sudden twisting, impact, or excessive force on a joint.
1. Causes
Ligament injuries commonly happen during sports activities, falls, road accidents, or sudden direction changes. Knees, ankles, and shoulders are the most frequently affected joints.
2. Types of Ligament Injury
Ligament damage is classified by severity. A mild sprain involves stretching, a moderate injury includes partial tearing, and a severe injury refers to a complete ligament tear such as an ACL rupture.
3. Symptoms
Typical symptoms include joint pain, swelling, bruising, instability, reduced range of motion, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected joint.
4. Treatment
Treatment depends on severity and may include rest, bracing, physiotherapy, medications, or surgical reconstruction in complete tears to restore joint stability.
