Answer
A clicking sound in the knee, medically called crepitus, occurs when structures inside the joint move or rub against each other during bending or straightening. In many cases, painless clicking is normal, but when associated with pain or swelling, it may indicate an underlying joint problem.
1. Gas Bubble Release
Small gas bubbles within joint fluid can burst during movement, creating a harmless clicking or popping sound.
2. Ligament or Tendon Movement
Ligaments or tendons may snap over bone surfaces during motion, producing clicking without causing damage.
3. Cartilage Wear
Cartilage degeneration or rough joint surfaces can cause grinding or clicking, commonly seen in early arthritis.
4. Meniscus Tear
A torn meniscus can create clicking, locking, or catching sensations inside the knee.
5. Patellar Tracking Issues
Improper kneecap alignment can produce sounds when the patella moves over the joint groove.
